The Holding Cell

Inside the House of Slaves • Gorée Island, Senegal • 2023

This is one of the cells where enslaved African men were held before being forced onto ships. The green patina on the walls is from centuries of decay. The wooden beams overhead are original. The single narrow opening provided the only light.

In spaces like this, 20 to 25 men were packed together for weeks, sometimes months. They had no idea what awaited them. Just darkness, uncertainty, and the weight of iron chains.

Standing here, you can feel the claustrophobia. The erasure. The calculated dehumanization of a system designed to break spirits before bodies ever left land.
