The Door of No Return

Gorée Island, Senegal • 2023

From the 15th to 19th century, millions of enslaved Africans passed through this doorway in the House of Slaves on Gorée Island. Beyond it lay ships waiting to cross the Atlantic. The turquoise water and open sky offered no escape, only the beginning of the Middle Passage.

This door still stands today, exactly as it did then.

This isn't decoration. It's a daily reminder that forgetting is a choice. When someone asks what it is, you get to tell them. That's the point.
